The Art Galleries at (TAG) at Austin Community College is seeking proposals for exhibitions and programming that bring community–wide engagement through the visual arts as a service to ACC and the local Austin community. Proposals should complement the gallery’s missions by prompting meaningful dialogues around critical issues. Projects should create opportunities for arts-based learning and exploration of themes and concepts by students and the broader communities of Austin. Exhibitions are planned a year or more in advance. Please keep this timeline in mind when proposing exhibitions.

TAG serves as an educational space and platform for ACC and the broader Austin community to engage with critical issues and cultivate creativity through exhibitions and public programming. Located at ACC Highland Campus, TAG hosts exhibitions in three gallery spaces, Gallery 2000, Gallery 4000, and the Art Lab (this proposal is currently available for Gallery 2000 only). Curatorial projects highlight and bring focus to contemporary issues and historical challenges present in our society, and in the arts, through exhibitions that feature established and emerging artists in Central Texas and beyond. Through annual student art exhibitions, faculty-led exhibitions, and open calls, TAG showcases the outstanding artistic achievements of ACC students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community artists.

Maintaining a place of belonging where different perspectives can become a forum for important dialogue and artistic imagination is an essential part of TAG’s educational mission. Exhibitions are supported by in-gallery programming, public events, and art-based learning designed to complement and enhance ACC’s academic offerings. Exhibition Narrative and Additional Components

This written narrative is a conceptual abstract (300 word limit) that describes the premise and objectives of the proposed exhibition, including concepts and themes explored, cultural and/or academic significance, and how the exhibition connects to the educational goals and mission of TAG. Additionally, we ask that applicants include how the exhibition will contribute to student success at ACC and cultivate a culture of belonging. All exhibitions will be co-curated with TAG staff and adhere to the values of the college.

The exhibition proposal will need to include a working title, information on the featured artist(s), and a description of the artist(s) artworks in relation to the exhibition’s narrative. Additionally, applicants will need to include an exhibition timeline, plan for installation and design (including general ideas for wall texts and signage), and needed materials and fabrication (such as pedestals, temporary walls, projectors, screens, media players, sound projection, specialized lighting, and other materials). This part of the proposal should also include a plan for transportation of artworks and any additional preparation required for artworks such as framing and special tools for mounting. TAG staff will install artworks, with assistance from featured artists as appropriate.

In addition to the exhibition proposed timeline, applicants will need to include a plan of work, indicating who will lead/curate the exhibition and roles for managing the exhibition project. TAG will partner with curator(s) and/or artist(s) to execute all parts of the exhibition, including curatorial work, installation and exhibition design, and outreach and educational programming efforts. Include ways in which you and/or the artist(s) in the exhibition will collaborate with TAG to work on the exhibition.

Applicants are encouraged to propose ideas for events and educational programming (such as exhibition opening reception, in-gallery artists talks, panel discussions, workshops, etc.) that will accompany the exhibition and further engage with audiences. Also include any additional thoughts for gallery publications and related resources you would like available during the exhibition run (such as brochures, catalogs, online resources, videos, etc.).

If applicable, include a proposed exhibition budget and any additional plans to secure funding through grants and special donations. Loan agreements with major institutions may be limited in scope due to funding and facilities requirements. Funds for shipping artworks will need to be included in this budget. At this time, the college is unable to accept shipments, therefore the lead curator and/or artist will need to coordinate artwork shipments outside of the galleries.

Object List and Artwork Images

Applicants are required to submit high quality images of artworks (or representations of proposed installations or incomplete artworks) and a preliminary object list which includes basic artwork information: artist name; artwork title; date completed; media; and dimensions. The object list may include samples, mock ups or representations for proposed installations, murals, or incomplete artworks. Applicants can also provide information for artworks that require special care and/or mounting equipment if applicable. This list can be a document (pdf or doc.x) or as a powerpoint.

Image files must be in jpeg format. 300 dpi is preferred. Please label each image file as lastname_firstname_artworktitle_01. Additional image files (alternative views) of artworks should be numbered sequentially. For example, lastname_firstname_artworktitle_02.

Curator/Artist CVs and Contact Information

Applicants are required to send CVs of all participating persons included in the proposal. Please include websites and additional links. CVs should include basic contact information including email address and phone number.
