What better place to study Art History than Italy where students gain first-hand experience of art and architecture from the Ancient world through Modern times? During the four-week program, we live in the historic center of Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance. Walking tours take students through architectural sites where we study paintings and sculptures in their original locations. Museum field trips allow a close-up examination of original masterpieces by Botticelli, Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and many others.

The program includes a day trip to San Gimignano, a nearby Tuscan city encircled by 13th-century walls, and two nights and three days in Rome. In Rome, students explore Ancient ruins, tour the Vatican, and visit Modern and Contemporary art venues. Highlights include the Pantheon, Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica, Raphael’s frescoes, Baroque illusionistic ceilings, and the intimate Borghese Gallery with exquisite works by Bernini and Caravaggio. Juxtapositions of the old and new, the ancient and the modern, evoke unexpected insights.

Participants return to Austin with a rich understanding of the interconnection between art, culture, place, and time. Studying abroad is a transformative learning experience. Participants become resourceful, and self-confident, and gain new insights and perspectives of the world. Memorable experiences and friendships continue to shape participants’ lives. Join us for this exciting journey!
