What better place to study Art History than Italy where students gain first-hand experience of art and architecture from the Ancient world through Modern times? During the four-week program, we live in the historic center of Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance. Walking tours take students through architectural sites where we study paintings and sculptures in their original locations. Museum field trips allow a close-up examination of original masterpieces by Botticelli, Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and many others.
The program includes a day trip to San Gimignano, a nearby Tuscan city encircled by 13th-century walls, and two nights and three days in Rome. In Rome, students explore Ancient ruins, tour the Vatican, and visit Modern and Contemporary art venues. Highlights include the Pantheon, Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica, Raphael’s frescoes, Baroque illusionistic ceilings, and the intimate Borghese Gallery with exquisite works by Bernini and Caravaggio. Juxtapositions of the old and new, the ancient and the modern, evoke unexpected insights.
Participants return to Austin with a rich understanding of the interconnection between art, culture, place, and time. Studying abroad is a transformative learning experience. Participants become resourceful, and self-confident, and gain new insights and perspectives of the world. Memorable experiences and friendships continue to shape participants’ lives. Join us for this exciting journey!

Vienna, Austria is consistently recognized among the world’s best places to live and is an ideal location to increase knowledge of the Visual Arts. Vienna boasts picturesque landscapes, historic architecture, and an active cultural scene with a well-connected transportation system and a multitude of culinary options.
This ancient city dates back to the time of the Roman Empire, which will be explored with a trip to the Roman Legionary Fortress of Carnuntum situated along the Danube. As a class, we will walk through time, moving from the first signs of civilization at the Naturhistoriches Museum to the present-day at the Mumok in the Museumsquartier. Towards the end of our stay in Vienna, we will travel by train to the cities of Salzburg and Munich to get a taste of these regions. Known as the birthplace of the great composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the bucolic backdrop of The Sound of Music, Salzburg is a small town with lots of personality. As a major city in the Bavarian region of Germany, Munich offers a thriving contemporary art scene. Upon our return to Vienna, we will prepare for the final days of class and enjoy a few last meetings before we depart.
It seems only fitting to have this journey take place in Vienna, where diverse people and cultures have intersected for thousands of years. Vienna is a place where intellect and learning are as important as food and drink and where an identity of a people has been formed largely through its language and arts.
