Yam Tolan’s work has been widely exhibited and is included in the permanent collections of MoMA, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Milwaukee Museum of Art, and the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, among others. He has served on the Boards of Directors of the Society for Photographic Education and the Texas Photographic Society. Yam attended Lewis & Clark College, where he majored in Chinese Studies. He received his BFA in Photography from NYU and his MFA from Arizona State University (ASU). In addition to ACC, his teaching experience includes positions at Phillips Academy, Syracuse University, St. Edward’s University in Austin, and Texas State University. He was co-director of the Andover-Bread Loaf Writing Workshop’s Lawrence Program, a photo editor and staff photographer at an online news site, and the Assistant Director of The Light Factory in Charlotte, NC. Yam’s creative and curatorial work has focused on topics related to the family. He co-curated the exhibition Family Matters at Northlight Gallery at ASU, which included the work of Sally Mann, Vince Leo, Melissa Shook, and Philip Lorca di Corcia. His own work has been included in the Museum of Modern Art’s Pleasures and Terrors of Domestic Comfort in addition to other exhibitions. Yam has received fellowships from the Houston Center for Photography and the Texas Photographic Society.
