How to Make a Mini Portfolio for Internship Apps

What is a Mini Portfolio?

If you plan to take IMED-2388 Internship you’ll want to prepare a mini portfolio. A mini portfolio is different from the professional portfolio that you make in your Portfolio class.

Professional Portfolio

Mini Portfolio

  • A professional website with personal branding and logo

  • Has a unique domain name

  • Includes 6–8 examples of your best work

  • Each work sample includes an in-depth case study to demonstrate your design thinking and process

  • Includes a bio

  • Includes contact information

  • View examples HERE
  • May be a simple website (e.g. through Adobe Portfolio), or a PDF document

  • Unique domain name not required

  • Includes 3–4 examples of your best work

  • Each work sample includes a brief description of the work (three sentences)

  • Includes contact information

  • View examples HERE

Your mini portfolio is one piece of your internship applications which will also include a resume and cover letter. Note that you’ll get a chance to develop these materials in the Strategies for Viscom Jobs class, which you will take the semester BEFORE you take Internship.

How to Prepare a Mini Portfolio

  • Select 3–4 examples of your best work from class projects. Choose projects for which you have 2–3 images.
  • For each project write a brief description that explains:
    • What  was the problem you were solving?
    • What was your approach to solving the problem?
    • What were the results (feedback from your teacher and peers)?
  • Choose how you want your portfolio to be presented. Will it be a PDF document or a simple website? You can make a simple portfolio website using Adobe Portfolio, which is included with your Creative Cloud subscription. You can make a PDF using any design software such as InDesign, or even google slides.
  • For either format (website or PDF) include the following pages:
    • A home page (website) / cover page (PDF) that includes your name, your contact information, and one hero image for each of your work samples.
    • A page for each work sample that includes 2–3 images of the work (mock ups are best), and your brief description of the project (you can repeat the hero image from your home page / cover page).
  • Export and/or publish your mini portfolio. Check that your link is visible by everyone.
    • If you are sharing a website ensure that the link is accurate, and that there is no password required to view the page.
    • If you are sharing a PDF double check that the file size is small enough for email attachments (under 20 MB), if you are sharing a link (e.g. via google drive), double check your sharing settings.
