Hanna Salmon
Hanna Salmon is an ethnomusicologist specializing in the music and storytelling of the Middle East. She earned her doctorate in ethnomusicology from the University of Texas at Austin. Her research studies Palestinian oral storytelling, focusing on a community of storytellers who tell Palestinian women’s oral folktales called kharārīf. By approaching storytelling performance techniques as methods of pursuing affective atmospheres, Hanna considers how oral storytelling creates opportunities for shared experience and supports communal belonging, resilience, and cultural resistance. In addition to her scholarly work, Hanna is also a classically trained pianist, and performs as an oud player and storyteller. Currently, she teaches American Music and Music Appreciation courses with Austin Community College and Our Lady of the Lake University (San Antonio).
