The ACC Art Department\u2019s Permanent Collection of over 300 student artworks displays the diversity of artistic disciplines taught at Austin Community College. For over twenty years, artworks have been carefully selected from annual student exhibitions for acquisition. Support for purchases has been provided by the Office of the Chancellor. <\/span><\/h3>\n

Stacia Lake<\/strong>,\u00a0mothman retires<\/em>, 2022,\u00a0papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9 and additional mixed media,\u00a024 x 24 x 12 in.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In this sculpture, <\/span>mothman retires<\/span><\/i>, ACC artist Stacia Lake humorously reimagines the \u201cMothman,\u201d a sinister creature born out of urban legend. Slumped into a chair, wearing fine clothes, and taking things at a slower pace, Mothman is enjoying retired life. Free from the daily grind of terrifying people, he becomes an unlikely philosopher that questions his own existence as he reads Jean-Paul Sartre\u2019s <\/span>Existentialism Is a Humanism <\/span><\/i>(1946).<\/span> By juxtapositing folklore, retired life, and deep philosophical contemplation, the artist playfully presents the theme of self realization through the eyes of a fictitious creature having an existential crisis about his own nature of being. In Sculpture I, students are introduced to three-dimensional artmaking through studio experiences that establish practical skills, knowledge of techniques and materials, and problem solving techniques to help achieve artistic goals.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

mothman retires <\/span><\/i>was exhibited in the 47th Annual ACC Student Art Exhibition (Spring 2023) and selected for purchase through the ACC Chancellor\u2019s Award.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
