The \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/commstudies\/contextualized-courses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SPCH 1311 for Health Sciences<\/a>\u00a0course includes a service learning project option. Additional professors who offer service learning components in their courses include: Theresa Glenn and Gretchen Harries.<\/p>\n<h3>ACC Student\u00a0Serves Children with Special Needs<\/h3>\n<p>Recently, Mary Ragan completed a service learning project for her Introduction to Speech Communication for Health Professionals course. Her service learning hours were spent volunteering for Learning Together Equestrians, which provides horse riding lessons as therapeutic treatment for children with special needs. Through her service learning project, Mary learned how special needs children communicate, particularly those with sensory problems.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Communication Studies Class Makes a Difference in the Community<\/h3>\n<p>On February 25, 2018, students enrolled in SPCH 1311 began an adventure that they never imagined could take place in a typical speech class. Through the means of a service learning project, 22 students experienced\u00a0academic learning by serving their community. These students participated in the 2018 Austin Crop Walk.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EYd5G6cu0vg?feature=oembed&amp;wmode=opaque\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Service learning is an experiential type learning that offers students the opportunity to apply their classroom\u00a0education to the \u201creal\u201d world. Students prepared for the CROP Walk by applying a formal problem solving\u00a0method learned in class to global issues such as:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internships can be an important part of the total educational experience.\u00a0 The Internship course is designed to help students combine their academic learning with hands-on work experience.\u00a0 There are many benefits associated with an internship.\u00a0 Students are able to add depth and relevance to their classroom work based on their exposure to actual professional working environments. In addition, a direct experience in a professional environment often provides the student with the opportunity to enhance their communication process and skills involved in areas such as a job search, interviews, and other professional skill areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In conjunction with class seminars, the individual student will set specific goals and objectives in the study of communication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-616\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.austincc.edu\/commstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2018\/03\/1311-Crop-Walk-2018-1-300x225.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/commstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2018\/03\/1311-Crop-Walk-2018-1-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/commstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2018\/03\/1311-Crop-Walk-2018-1-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/commstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2018\/03\/1311-Crop-Walk-2018-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/commstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2018\/03\/1311-Crop-Walk-2018-1-940x705.jpg 940w\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the day of the CROP Walk, which raises funds for hunger in Austin and globally, students spoke to the walkers and educated them on these global issues.<br \/>\nAccording to author Nick Morgan, \u201cThe only reason to give a speech is to change the world.\u201d ACC students\u00a0changed the world by preparing public presentations on these significant issues. Through this project,\u00a0students were able to realize the impact that public speaking can make on the lives of others. They were able\u00a0to get out of the classroom and see the actual application of academic theory. Students left the comfort of\u00a0the classroom and drove out to Camp Mabry and shared their research with walkers. They were able to\u00a0overcome the basic trials of public speaking while making a difference in our community.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-617 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/sites.austincc.edu\/commstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2018\/03\/1311-Crop-Walk-2018-2-300x225.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"http:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/commstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2018\/03\/1311-Crop-Walk-2018-2-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/commstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2018\/03\/1311-Crop-Walk-2018-2-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/commstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2018\/03\/1311-Crop-Walk-2018-2-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/sites.austincc.edu\/commstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/170\/2018\/03\/1311-Crop-Walk-2018-2-940x705.jpg 940w\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/>Upon reflecting on the experience, student Anderson Roy explained, \u201cParticipating in the CROP Walk was a\u00a0very upbeat, fun and enlightening experience for me. It\u2019s amazing all of the things happening in different\u00a0parts of the world that I had no idea about\u2026.I\u2019m happy to have been able to help educate the public on these\u00a0issues and hopefully to have contributed to making a difference in these parts of the world.\u201d Julio Lopez\u00a0summed it up by stating, \u201cI learned that educating people can really make a difference in our community and\u00a0in the world.\u201d According to Kathy Hackett, volunteer coordinator for the Austin Crop Walk, walkers\u00a0commented that the ACC volunteers were great and very informative. Ms. Hackett continued by writing, \u201cI\u00a0think I can literally say that the work the ACC students did will save lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Past Service Learning Experiences<\/h3>\n<p>During spring 2015 through the means of service learning, students enrolled in SPCH 1311 at the Northridge Campus, experienced academic learning by serving their community and by participating in the 2015 Austin Crop Walk.<\/p>\n<p>ACC students changed the world by preparing public presentations on global issues such as world hunger focusing on Cambodia and the US, environmental issues in Serbia, literacy deficiencies, the effects of war on children and the HIV\/AIDS crisis in Africa.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EQ0BG7Vzpbw\">Hear what students had to say about their experience.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThe only reason to give a speech is to change the world.\u201d\u00a0\u2013Nick Morgan, Author Service learning is an experiential type learning that offers students the opportunity to apply their classroom education to the \u201creal\u201d world.
